August 19th: 225 cases in 2 days, at least 31 people hospitalized | Decatur, IL | Macon County

Macon County Health Department reports 106 new cases and 31 people in the hospital on August 18th & 119 new cases on August 17th. The entire week of August 6th, there were "only" 169 new cases. Now we're topping that in 2 days. Before July 23rd, we had a 7 week period with less than 32 cases per week.

And we may even have more hospitalized patients than reported. DMH reported on Friday, August 13th that they had 30 COVID patients (85% unvaccinated), and St. Mary's reported being in a similar state.

I've also received reports from nurses who confirm high covid case loads. I will not release their names, so you should take it with grain of salt & maybe ask hospital employees you know.

About the Data

View the Data on our daily page.

I have linked to Macon County Health Department's daily reports above (aug 17 & 18), but I have not yet integrated these into my daily updates page.

MCHD data shows 225 cases (119 + 106) for August 17th & 18th. IDPH shows 187 cases (140 + 47) for August 17th & 18th. I believe Macon County Health & IDPH collect data for reports at different times of the day. The patterns in cases are the same if you compare mchd data to idph data. & the overall case counts are very similary (11,993 for IDPH on August 18; 12,052 for MCHD on August 18).

I plan to write up more about these discrepencies in the future, but there are higher priorities for our community right now than getting "perfect" data reporting.

I went with the MCHD for this article because I looked at it before I looked at the IDPH data. So this article was already written with that data as the central focus. It could just as easily say "187 cases in 2 days" because that's what IDPH reported for Macon County.

Soon, these daily reports will also have a data snapshot for that day.
